Drew Dyczkowski scored the overtime game-winner and the Long Island University women's ice hockey team (15-14-1, 13-10-1 NEWHA) defeated Saint Anselm College (15-14-1, 15-8-1 NEWHA), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center, completing a weekend sweep of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance's first-place team. The Sharks extended their winning streak to four games, their longest wining streak of the season, and have won eight of their last 10 games.
Dyczkowski (two goals) and
Ryane Kearns (one goal, one assist) led the Sharks with two points apiece, as LIU honored its six-member senior class of Kearns,
Milana Butera, Emma
Mörtl, Lisa
Schröfl,
Paige Vreeman, and
Anya Weilandt in a pregame ceremony.
Trailing 2-0 in the final seconds of the second period, Dyczkowski scored her first goal of the night, with assists from Kearns and
Kristen Kiggen, pulling the Sharks within a goal.
Late in the third period, Kearns tied the game with a score at 14:58, assisted by
Crosby Wildfong and
Marin Jugnauth.
Dyczkowski's game-winner came at 2:23 of the extra session with assists by
Mörtl and Weilandt, giving LIU its third straight overtime win.
LIU outshout Saint Anselm, 54-23, and blocked 21 shots. Redshirt sophomore goaltender
Victoria Rutnik made 21 saves, earning her eighth win in 11 appearances this season.
LIU returns to action on Friday at Sacred Heart University in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Pioneers will make the return trip to Long Island on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m.
