Grace Babington Goal, Victoria Rutnik Shutout Leads LIU Past Sacred Heart

Sharks earn 9th win in last 12 games

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Junior forward Grace Babington scored the game-winner in the second period and redshirt sophomore goaltender Victoria Rutnik recorded a shutout as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team (16-15-1, 14-11-1 NEWHA) defeated Sacred Heart University (12-18-2, 11-13-2 NEWHA), 1-0, on Saturday night at Northwell Health Ice Center. The Sharks earned their ninth win in their last 12 games.

Late in the second period of a scoreless tie, Babington jammed in a loose puck near the crease to score her team-leading 13th goal of the season, assisted by Drew Dyczkowski and Paige Vreeman at 14:11.

The Sharks maintained the one-goal lead the rest of the way as Rutnik saved all 26 shots faced, earning her third shutout win of the season.

LIU outshot SHU, 27-26, blocked 15 shots, and committed just one penalty, killing off Sacred Heart's lone power play attempt.

The Sharks return to action on Friday, Feb. 20, versus Post University in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series to cap the regular season. Puck drop of Friday's regular season home finale is scheduled for 3 p.m.
