EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's ice hockey team (10-13-1, 8-9-1 NEWHA) defeated the Assumption University Greyhounds (10-12-2, 10-6-2 NEWHA), 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center. The lone goal was scored by senior defender
Lisa Schröfl with only 58 seconds remaining in the second period, assisted by senior forward
Milana Butera.
The Sharks were alert on defense throughout the game. LIU recorded 20 blocked shots as sophomore defender
Kristen Kiggen led the team with four blocks.
Sam Mathe,
Addison Robillard, and
Emma Mörtl each added three blocks.
In
Victoria Rutnik's fifth game of the year, the sophomore goaltender earned her second shutout of the season, making 27 saves.
Saturday's win was highlighted by the program's alumni in attendance, recognized during the first intermission for building LIU women's ice hockey into a championship program. The Sharks have won three regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and made one NCAA tournament appearance in just seven years.
LIU returns to action on Friday, Jan. 23, at Stonehill College, in the first game of a weekend pair against the Skyhawks in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Puck drop on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.
