Easton, Mass. — LIU scored fourteen runs on Thursday afternoon, but were ultimately defeated by Stonehill 16-14.
The Sharks built up a 10-3 lead by the sixth inning to take control and were paced by clutch hits from
Joseph Durso throughout. The catcher hit a bases-loaded (and clearing) three-run double in the fourth as LIU pulled ahead 4-1. Durso came up to bat with three ducks on the pond once again in the fifth inning, and singled as two more runs came around. This gave LIU an 8-2 lead.
The Skyhawks later scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up at ten apiece. The Sharks' opponent went on to score three runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings, amassing a six-run lead, 16-10.
LIU wasn't done, however, showing resiliency in the ninth. Durso continued his hit-parade and helped the Sharks score their first run of the inning with an RBI-single, and
Jacob Pipercic crushed a three-run home run (his second of the game following a two-run shot in the fourth) to left-field later in the inning to cut the deficit to two. That was as close as LIU would come.
Durso finished the game going 4-for-4 with five RBI, and Pipercic also drove in five with two home runs and four runs scored as part of a 3-for-5 day.
Benjamin Fierenzi,
Jack Power, and
Mason Breton all chipped in with two hits each for the Sharks.
LIU and Stonehill will return to action on Friday, May 16 at 1 p.m.
