Late Homers by Burnett & Garcia Help Top-Seeded LIU over CCSU

Sharks advance to NEC title game Sunday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University softball team (26-22, 16-5 Northeast Conference) won two elimination games in comeback fashion on Saturday at the NEC Softball Championship, claiming an 8-6 win over Central Connecticut State University after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson University 5-4 earlier on Saturday.

LIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the ballgame against CCSU, with junior Devon Medina delivering a two-RBI single in the top of the second inning. After CCSU took the lead in the bottom of the third, the Sharks quickly retook the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI single by sophomore Lily Hinkle and an RBI single by senior Alyssa Polemeni

With the lead having been changed three times already, LIU trailed the Blue Devils 6-5 entering the top of the seventh inning. After sophomore Jen Rodriguez was walked, freshman Hannah Burnett delivered a two-run home run to return the advantage back to the Sharks, with junior Alyssa Garcia adding some insurance with a home run of her own in the next at-bat to give LIU an 8-6 lead, a lead they held on to for the win.

Hinkle, Medina and Burnett all tied with a team-high two RBI apiece, while Garcia and Hinkle led the Sharks with three hits each. Sophomore Sophia Mariottini earned the win against CCSU.

Before the game against CCSU, the Sharks took on FDU. LIU trailed the Knights 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, though the Sharks got on the board with a solo home run off the bat of Polemeni, cutting the lead to 2-1. In the same inning, sophomore Jen Rodriguez delivered a two-RBI single to give LIU its first lead of the game.

After FDU retook the lead with a two-run home run, an RBI single by Burnett and an RBI double from Garcia gave the Sharks a 5-4 lead in the ballgame, eventually holding on to win by the same score.

Six Sharks each recorded one hit against the Knights, while Rodriguez paced LIU with two RBI in the win. In the circle, senior Alyssa O'Donnell earned her seventh win of the season.

LIU will take on No. 2 seed Saint Francis in the NEC Softball Championship title game on Sunday morning. First pitch is at 8 a.m.
