BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — A winner of three NEC Pitcher of the Week awards (including the last two),
Garrett Yawn continued to flex the clutch gene to help LIU pick up a win over Coppin State on Saturday, defeating the conference opponent 7-4.
Yawn looked terrific, striking out ten in six and a third innings pitched while holding Coppin State to just two earned runs. Picking up his ninth win of the season, this was Yawn's eighth straight start pitching at least six innings, and the fifth in six outings in which he's reached double-digit strikeouts.
On offense, the Sharks were paced by 2-for-4 days from
Ryan Rivera and
Jack Power. Power launched a two-run home run beyond the fence in the fifth inning, and
Mason Breton hit a two-run blast of his own in the sixth.
Benjamin Fierenzi also drove in two runs as part of a 1-for-5 performance for LIU.
RJ Latkowski pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save and help LIU win the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
