Box Score 2 EASTON, Mass. - The Long Island University softball team earned two wins in Saturday's doubleheader on the road against Stonehill College, defeating the Skyhawks 12-8 in the first game before winning 8-0 in six innings.
"We saw the ball really well today and put some good swings on pitches around the zone," LIU softball Head Coach Andy Russo said.
The Sharks got rolling early in the first game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run by junior Alyssa Garcia and an RBI single by graduate student Dallas Andrews. LIU then extended its lead to 4-0 with a solo home run by sophomore Jaedyn Lincoln.
After Stonehill cut the LIU lead to one in the bottom of the third inning, Lincoln delivered her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning. The floodgates opened in the top of the seventh inning; LIU scored seven runs, hitting three home runs to extend its lead to 12-4. Senior Alyssa Polemeni (solo), sophomore Kaylee Clarkson (two-run) and sophomore Lily Hinkle (three-run) all hit home runs in the inning, while senior Priscilla Gilles drove in a run with an RBI single. Following an attempted rally by the Skyhawks, LIU walked away with a 12-8 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Shark bats stayed hot to begin the second game of the doubleheader, as Hinkle gave LIU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a solo home run, with the team stretching its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second with RBI from Andrews and Hinkle.
Freshman Hannah Burnett hit LIU's seventh home run of the day in the top of the fifth inning, and the Sharks extended their lead to 8-0 with RBI by Hinkle, Garcia and Burnett in the top of the sixth inning. After three quick outs, the Sharks earned an 8-0 win in six innings.
LIU returns on Saturday for the final game of the series against Stonehill, with the first pitch coming at noon.
