EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – LIU has advanced to the NEWHA semifinals after holding off Saint Michael's with a 2-0 win on Saturday.
The Sharks won the best-of-three NEWHA quarterfinal series 2-0, thanks to goals from
Drew Dyczkowski and
Anya Weilandt.
Dyczkowski, a freshman, emerged as a game-two hero after scoring her second goal of the season at the 19:25 mark of the second period, with less than a minute left to play. This broke a scoreless tie, ultimately giving LIU a lead it would hold on to the rest of the way.
Junior
Anya Weilandt followed suit with some late third-period prowess, scoring her sixth goal of the season to help LIU to put the finishing touches on the 2-0 victory.
"We're feeling pretty good right now. We played a solid sixty minutes in game one and our team knows that," women's hockey head coach
Kelly Nash said. "We started a little slower than we would've liked to today, but it was great to see us come back in the third. That was one of the best third periods we've played while having a lead at the same time, so we're feeling pretty good."
Graduate student goaltender
Abbie Thompson, who led the conference with 18 regular-season wins, had 25 saves as the Sharks shut out Saint Michael's in back-to-back games to close out the series.
LIU will open up the NEWHA semifinals at the Northwell Health Ice Center on Wednesday, March 5.
