Jack Power Homers Twice As LIU Earns 12-8 Win Over Hofstra

Power, Matthew McGurk & Benjamin Fierenzi drove in 3 runs apiece in win

Farmingdale, N.Y. — Jack Power homered twice, leading three Sharks with three RBI apiece as LIU baseball picked up a 12-8 win over Hofstra on Tuesday.

LIU set the tone early, jumping out to a 9-0 lead by the third inning thanks to a seven-run second inning and then tacking on two more in the third.

Matthew McGurk hit a bases-loaded double in the second to score two and it was clear at that point the Sharks were just getting started. After his team successfully loaded the bases again, Chandler Ketchup walked to drive in a run. That was followed by productive run-scoring outs from Benjamin Fierenzi (sacrifice fly) and Noah Sorensen, who earned an RBI after grounding out to make it 5-0 LIU.

That's when Jack Power stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run home run. Fierenzi went on to rack up his second and third RBI of the day with a two-run single in the third inning.

Hofstra would narrow its deficit by scoring five runs in the middle innings, still trailing 9-5 heading into the fifth. McGurk scored on a balk to make it 10-5 courtesy of the Sharks, and though Hofstra would later come as close as 10-8, both Power and McGurk would flex the clutch gene yet again when LIU came up to bat in the ninth. Power smacked a 1-2 pitch for his second homer of the day, and McGurk hit an RBI single to make it a 12-8 game.

Nicolas Benhardt got the start for LIU, striking out three in three innings and holding Hofstra to one run. Dominic Vassallo earned the win while striking out three in one and two-thirds innings of relief, while Evan Panjwani closed things out for his second save of the season.

LIU will look to keep things rolling on Saturday, March 1, taking on Lehigh in a doubleheader.
