BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The premier Division I wrestling match on Long Island took place at Long Island University, as the LIU Sharks faced off against the Hofstra Pride. In a hard-fought battle, Hofstra edged out the Sharks 19-16 in the final match of the night.
The Sharks took an early 4-3 lead with
Brayden Roberts' dominant 9-1 victory over Frank Volpe. However, Hofstra responded by winning the next three matches, jumping ahead 12-4.
Corey Connolly then brought the Sharks back within striking distance, pinning Nikolas Miller in the second period to make it 12-10.
Chris Powell's 6-2 victory over Danny Church put the Sharks back on top, and
Robbie Sagaris added to the lead with a gritty 1-0 win over Dylan Acevedo Switzer, making it 16-12 in favor of LIU. Unfortunately, the Sharks dropped the final two matches of the night, allowing Hofstra to secure the 19-16 victory.
The Sharks return to action this weekend at the Pratt Recreation Center, taking on the Dragons of Drexel University. This matchup will be another great test for LIU as they continue their season. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they look to bounce back from this close loss and build momentum. Match time is Sunday at 12:00 PM in the Pratt Recreation Center.
