Polat Tasbasi Named NEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Rodriguez Poulsen takes home Rookie of the Week, Vientesa named Prime Performer

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - Three members of the Long Island University men's and women's swimming programs received weekly honors from the NEC on Wednesday, including junior Polat Tasbasi being named the NEC Men's Swimmer of the Week. 

Freshman Mario Rodriguez Poulsen was named the NEC Men's Rookie of the Week, while he and Tasbasi both received Prime Performer honors. On the women's side, sophomore Liene Vientesa garnered Prime Performer honors. 

Tasbasi, a native of Ankara, Turkey, won both of his individual events at Saturday's home meet against Manhattan, which the Sharks won 171-83. He claimed first in both the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 56.13 seconds, and the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:03.89 minutes. Tasbasi also was a member of the 200-yard medley (second leg; 25.20 split; 1:34.94 team time) and 400-yard freestyle (final leg; 45.37 split, 3:09.86 team time) relays, which both won in their respective events. 

Rodriguez Poulsen finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.41 seconds), the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.23 minute), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.81 minutes) at Saturday's meet. The Oviedo, Asturias, Spain native also led off LIU's 200-yard medley relay team, posting a split of 25.03 seconds while the Sharks finished the event in 1:34.94 minute. 

Vientesa finished first in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.98 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.30 minute) in Saturday's meet against Manhattan and Saint Francis University. The Riga, Latvia native also swam the third leg on both the first-place finshing 200-yard medley (26.38 split, 1:49.48 team time) and 400-yard freestyle (53.40 split, 3:39.48 team time) relay teams. 

LIU returns to action on Nov. 8, when both teams host Wagner College at 11 a.m.
