BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — In their NEC home opener, the women's soccer Sharks held onto their 2-1 lead to pick up a much-deserved victory over CCSU on Sunday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park.
After a scoreless first half,
Stephanie Schubert got LIU on the board first with her third goal of the season off a cross from
Emma Panagiotakopoulos in the 51st minute of the contest.
14 minutes later, senior
Grace Hennig took a through pass from
Izzy Stein and stuffed it out of the goalkeeper's reach in what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
"This was a big win and we are so happy for our team," said head coach Thomas Giovatto. "They worked extremely hard and should be proud of themselves for the effort they put forth to get this result."
Freshman
Sofia Shakham made her first career start that resulted in her first collegiate victory. She made two saves on the day and was active around the net on CCSU's set pieces.
The Sharks don't play again until next Sunday, September 29, when they head to Le Moyne. The game can be seen on NEC Front Row and is slated for 4 p.m.
