BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Long Island University today announced the promotion of Elliott Charles to Director of Athletics.

Charles has served in high-level administrative positions in some of the country's most prestigious college athletics programs. He served as Clemson University's Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Services and was the Assistant Director of Athletic Compliance at the University of Alabama. His decorated career also saw stops at Florida A&M University, the University of South Florida, and a stint as the Assistant Commissioner for Compliance with the Mid-American Conference.

Charles, a Long Island native, previously served as LIU's Deputy Director of Athletics. Charles will oversee LIU's 38 Division I sports teams, including several 2023-24 NEC championship teams such as men's baseball and soccer, and women's lacrosse, tennis, and volleyball. Prior to joining LIU, Charles served as the Director of Athletics at Chicago State University from 2019 to 2022. During his tenure, Charles established the tenets of student-first approach, personal investment, and innovation as the core values of the school's athletics program. He brought men's soccer back to campus after a 30-year hiatus and oversaw the construction of several key facilities including the installation of the Jones Convocation Center basketball court.

"I am honored and excited to serve LIU, our student-athletes, and sport programs in this critical leadership capacity. Our student-athletes continue to excel academically, and I am looking forward to sustaining and enhancing our well-established competitive success.  I would like to thank our President, Dr. Kimberly Cline, and our university leadership for their continued enthusiastic support of LIU Athletics."

"We are fortunate to have someone with Elliott's athletic leadership experience in this important role. He is committed to excellence and his student-centered approach will continue to elevate LIU's championship athletics program," said LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline.

A 2013 graduate of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Leadership Institute, Charles holds an MBA from Northern Illinois University and a master's degree in Sports Management from Illinois State University. He earned his bachelor's degree in business management from the University of South Florida. Charles also completed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace certificate from the University of South Florida.
