Jake Mastillo Hits Grand Slam, Dominic Pieto Strikes Out 17 Batters; Sharks Sweep Doubleheader

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Jake Mastillo hit a grand slam, and Dominic Pieto struck out a program-record 17 batters as the LIU baseball team picked up a pair of wins by sweeping its doubleheader against Norfolk State on Friday.

Jake Mastillo hit a grand slam in game one to give LIU a 4-0 lead.

Benjamin Fierenzi drove in two runs with a double to right field, giving LIU a 6-4 lead in the fifth.

Matthew McGurk went yard in the seventh after launching a three-run home run to left-center.

Garrett Yawn started the game and struck out six batters in 4.2 innings.

Evan Panjwani struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief, and PJ Moritz struck out a couple in the final two frames.

The Sharks won game one 11-5.

Dominic Pieto was the standout of game two. The redshirt junior struck out 17 batters, setting the program record for the most strikeouts in a game by a player in LIU history.

Seth Surrett and Noah Sorensen singled in the third inning. LIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Jack Power drove in a pair of runs with a single to center, and Benjamin Fierenzi finished off the inning with a three-run home run as the Sharks took a commanding 7-0 lead.

Bentley Boekhout drove in two runs in the fifth inning with a single to right, and then Jack Ryan hit a three-run home run.

LIU won game two 14-6 and scored a combined 25 runs in the doubleheader.

The Sharks look to sweep the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
