EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — CHAMPS!
As the LIU women's hockey team moved closer to clinching another NEWHA regular-season title, the Sharks achieved a milestone in the process.
With a 2-1 win against Stonehill on Saturday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center, LIU earned its 21st victory of the season. That established a new program record, surpassing the 20-win season of a year ago that included NEWHA regular-season and postseason championships.
Then, when second-place Saint Anselm lost on Saturday night, the Sharks officially repeated as regular-season champions, despite five games remaining in their regular season.
With LIU and Stonehill tied in the third period on Saturday,
Jeannie Wallner poked in the game-winner with 7 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
It marked the ninth straight one-goal game for the Sharks — the past seven of which have been victories.
LIU (21-8, 21-2 NEWHA) next travel on Tuesday to Sacred Heart for the makeup of a game snowed out last month.
