ERIE, Pa. — The LIU women's water polo team opened up the Curtis Robinette Memorial Invitational on Saturday with two gigantic victories over Mercyhurst and Chapman.
The Sharks defeated Mercyhurst 20-8. Early in the match LIU let Mercyhurst hang around until rattling off six goals in a row to give itself a seven goal lead. The barrage didn't stop there, however, because when the Lakers responded with three of their own the Sharks eight unanswered goals to end the match.
In the second match of the day, LIU dominated from the jump as it beat Chapman 31-6. Five different Sharks scored five or more goals as they cruised to an easy win.
Sydney deVroedt scored the most goals on the day for LIU with 12 and was followed closely behind by
Paola Dominguez-Castro who scored 11.
Elena Camarena scored nine, Ale Araguren had eight and
Diba Peiravani tallied seven.
Martina Gianonni made 16 saves, 11 of which came against Chapman, and scored her first goal as a Shark.
The women's water polo team returns to the pool Sunday morning when it takes on Penn State Behrend at 11 a.m
