BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU women's basketball team played FDU in an important in-conference matchup on Thursday night as both teams are fighting for better positioning in the NEC standings.
This game was the definition of a back-and-forth matchup as both the Knights and Sharks held large leads. FDU led by as much as 13 in the fourth quarter but LIU did not go away. Baskets by Ashley Austin, Samantha Bailey, Emaia O'Brien and Janessa Williams would bring the Sharks even at 50 with six minutes left to play. The pendulum swung in LIU's direction as they led by one with under minute, but that was only until FDU hit a three with 46 seconds remaining. A Shark miss would seal the deal and they fell 59-56.
Nine Sharks scored points in the game, led by Ashley Austin who had 10. She was followed Amaya Dowdy (nine points) and Emaia O'Brien (eight points).
Alexzeya Brooks had a team-high nine rebounds while O'Brien led the Sharks with five assists.
The Sharks return to the court on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Saint Francis U.
