LIU Wrestling Competes In Black Knight Invite

West Point, N.Y. — This past weekend, the LIU Sharks traveled to West Point for the prestigious Black Knight Invite, where they faced a competitive field of top wrestling schools. Among the notable teams invited were host school Army, Binghamton, Bloomsburg, Columbia, Gardner-Webb, LIU, Michigan State, Penn State, and Rutgers.

The Sharks had several standout performances, with Devin Matthews earning a 5th-place finish at 141 pounds and Brayden Roberts securing 5th at 157 pounds. Matthews finished with a 4-1 record, recovering from a first-round loss to Nate Lucifer of Binghamton. He won his next four matches, including victories over Jaden Crumpler of Michigan State (5-0), Cael Nasdeo of Penn State (5-2), Ryan Franco of Army (10-2), and Ty Edwards of Gardner-Webb (19-4) in the 5th-place match.

Roberts, who suffered a first-round loss to Jayden Le of Columbia (4-1), battled back to secure 5th place. He pinned Jack Conley of Michigan State at 1:11 of the first period, then beat Fin Nadeau of Binghamton 5-1. In the 5th-place match, Roberts avenged his earlier loss to Le by pinning him in 4:34 of the second period.

Other individual results included:
  • Sawyer Ostroff (125 lbs) finished 0-2.
  • Jared Chiquilin (133 lbs) went 1-2, with a win over Tristen Lugan of Bloomsburg.
  • Branden Rozanski (141 lbs) finished with two losses.
  • Amir Avazov (141 lbs) finished 1-3, with a win against Sean Larkin of Michigan State.
  • Drew Witham (149 lbs) earned a victory over Hayden Coy of Bloomsburg, finishing 1-3.
  • Jordan Barry (149 lbs) finished 0-2.
  • Tommy Bonasera (149 lbs) finished 0-2.
  • Jack Valentin (157 lbs) finished with two losses.
  • James Johnson (165 lbs) picked up a fall against Leo Hess of Bloomsburg in 2:45 of the first period, finishing 1-3.
  • Donavan Smith (174 lbs) posted a 1-3 record, with a victory by fall against Columbia's Matt Romanelli at 6:13 of the third period.
  • Corey Connolly (174 lbs) finished 0-2.
  • Anthony D'Alesio (184 lbs) went 2-2, with wins over Edison Flores of Gardner-Webb (fall at 5:45 in the third period) and teammate Brendan Brown (fall at 2:37 in the first period).
  • Maxx Decapua (197 lbs) went 0-2.
  • Chris Powell (285 lbs) finished 2-2, with wins over Gardner-Webb's Mason Blue (pin at 1:23 of the first period) and West Point's Sam Sorenson.
Despite some tough losses, the Sharks showed resilience and determination. Matthews and Roberts led the team with strong individual finishes, helping LIU secure 6th place overall with 41 points.
