Men's Soccer Turns to Conference Play after Hofstra Match

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — LIU men's soccer standout Emil Jaaskelainen and Hofstra forward Ryan Carmichael entered Tuesday's head-to-head matchup tied for the Division I career goal-scoring lead among active players with 33 apiece.

Unfortunately for the Sharks, Carmichael found the back of the net in the showdown.

In fact, Hofstra scored three second-half goals in a 13-minute, 7-second span of the second half and defeated LIU, 3-0, at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks had chances during a scoreless first half, including on Alan Martinez's free kick from just beyond the box. Martinez, who had scored from a similar location in the previous match against Columbia, had the shot stopped by the goalkeeper. And teammate Stevan Miloševic's header off the rebound went wide.

LIU (3-4-1) now steps into conference play for the duration of the regular season. The Sharks next travel to Central Connecticut State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
