BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU men's soccer team continued its flair for the dramatic against Columbia.
Co-captain
Alan Martinez scored the equalizer on a free kick in the 59th minute and the Sharks tied Columbia, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park.
Martinez's goal came on a free kick — less than two minutes after Columbia had taken the lead on a goal from Chad Baker.
"I wanted to get it up and over the wall," Martinez said. "The keeper told the wall not to jump, so I knew I had go over. And I knew the keeper wouldn't save it."
LIU outshot the Lions 25-9, including 8-3 in shots on goal.
Emil Jaaskelainen had a first-half penalty kick saved and the teams were scoreless at halftime.
Junior college transfer
Jonathan Villacis made two saves in his LIU goalkeeping debut in place of scratched
Eoin Gawronski, who previously had logged every minute for the Sharks.
LIU also played without defender and co-captain
Robert Winkler, who is nursing an injury.
The Sharks had a dramatic second-half goal last season against Columbia as well. Jaaskelainen scored with 66 seconds remaining in regulation for a 1-0 victory in the 2022 meeting in New York City.
The Sharks next face Hofstra on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The match will now be played at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead.
