BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Northeast Conference on Monday saluted the achievements of its winter sports student-athletes both in the classroom and in competition.
And LIU had a banner day.
Three Sharks earned Winter Scholar-Athlete honors from the NEC as the top combined athletic/academic achievers in their sports: men's track's Jonathan Gonzalez, men's swimmer Marcell Matyikó and women's swimmer Venna Andersen.
Additionally, 132 LIU fall student-athletes were named to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll for maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, with 51 of those student-athletes additionally earning a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for achieving at least a 3.75 GPA.
Gonzalez earned the NEC indoor championship in the 4000m medley relay and received first-team all-conference honors on Feb. 20. He also finished third in the 800m run at that event.
Andersen, a junior biology major from Lloydminster, Alberta, set program records in the 50 breast (28.37) as well as 200 and 400 medley relays at NEC Championships in February.
Matyikó, a junior biology major from Veszprém, Hungary, is a team captain who set school and NEC meet records with a win in the 400 IM at the 2022 NEC Championships with a time of 4:01.32.
