DOVER, Del. — Garrett Yawn dominated on the mound to propel the LIU baseball team to a series sweep on Saturday.
Yawn retired the game's first 13 batters and took a shutout bid into the eighth inning en route to a complete game as the Sharks defeated host Delaware State, 5-1.
LIU improved to 13-8 in the NEC.
Yawn, a junior right-hander from Moorpark, Calif., limited Delaware State to one run on three hits while issuing no walks and striking out a career-high 11 batters in the 113-pitch, nine-inning outing.
He produced the longest outing by an LIU pitcher since
Alec Huertas also tossed a complete game in a 5-0 victory against Mount St. Mary's on May 7, 2021.
LIU grabbed a 3-0 lead with a three-run fifth that included a solo homer from
Connor Price and
Max Samson singling and scoring on a wild pitch. The lead swelled to 5-0 in the eighth when
Jack Power delivered an RBI triple and scored on an error on the play.
Delaware State finally cracked the scoreboard against Yawn with back-to-back one-out doubles in the bottom half of the frame.
LIU travels to Army West Point on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game, then hosts Coppin State next weekend in a three-game NEC series.
