BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Dominic Pieto continued the solid starting pitching for the LIU baseball team this series, limiting Maryland Eastern Shore to two runs in six innings.
However, the Hawks used a three-run seventh after Pieto departed to defeat the Sharks, 5-4, at the LIU Baseball Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing by two runs, LIU was poised to have the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but aggressive baserunning resulted in the trail runner being thrown out at second trying to turn a hit into a double.
Keniel DeLeon then scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat to pull LIU within a run.
Jack Power drove in a pair of runs in the defeat.
Pieto's outing came on the heels of
Alec Huertas going seven innings in Friday's series opener.
The teams play the rubber game on Sunday at noon.
