EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU women's hockey team has not shied away from top-tier competition during the nonconference portion of its schedule.
The Sharks opened the season with a pair of games apiece against No. 5 Northeastern and No. 7 Minnesota Duluth.
And on Tuesday afternoon, for their fifth nonconference game of the season, LIU welcomed 12th-ranked Princeton to Northwell Health Ice Center.
The Tigers ultimately prevailed, 6-3, to snap the Sharks' program-record 12-game winning streak, all of which came against NEWHA opponents.
With LIU trailing 5-0,
Paige Vreeman,
Grace Babington and
Ashley Morrow scored consecutive goals spanning the second and third periods to pull the Sharks within two goals.
However, Princeton restored a three-goal cushion on Sarah Fillier's goal 4 minutes, 39 seconds into the third period en route to the victory.
The matchup pitted LIU head coach
Kelly Nash against Princeton counterpart Caray Morey. Nash served as an assistant on Morey's Tigers staff from 2017 through 2019.
LIU next faces Saint Michael's on Friday and Saturday in Colchester, Vt.
