BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The LIU men's water polo team celebrated its seniors on Sunday before its thrilling match against Iona.
The Sharks went back and forth with Gaels all match and came all the way back from four goals down in front of a packed LIU pool crowd.
The match was tied at 13 entering the fourth period but Iona struck first to take a lead.
Ethan Zirh who was honored before the match, made a key save on a penalty shot to keep the deficit at one but the Sharks could not capitalize.
Iona would score a goal a few minutes later and while LIU would get one back after a score from
Ben LeClair it would not be enough as Iona would park the bus and not let anything past the back line.
The Gaels scored a goal in the dying seconds and the Sharks fell 18-16.
Honored before the match were Zirh,
Karl Lovett, and leading goal scorer
Riyad Shehadeh.
All three played terrific in their final home game at LIU. Zirh made numerous big saves to keep the Sharks in it while Shehadeh and Lovett combined for nine of the sixteen goals.
Also scoring in the match were LeClair,
Tony Franco,
Logan Morgan, and
Josep Jodra Muñoz.
The Sharks wrap up their regular season on Sunday when they travel to Connecticut College.
