BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Joshua Saavedra produced his first two collegiate goals a week ago en route to earning the NEC Rookie of the Week award.
He appears a prime candidate to repeat.
With the LIU men's soccer team back in action on Sunday, Saavedra continued his scoring binge.
A freshman midfielder from Miami, Saavedra produced the game-winner in the 49th minute and LIU ultimately produced a 3-1 win against Howard at LIU Soccer Park.
After Howard opened the scoring in the 13th minute,
Emil Jaaskelainen answered for LIU when he finished a crossing pass
Saïdou Diallo later in the half.
And after Saavedra tallied the tiebreaker,
Ben Assane Fall scored off an assist from Saavedra in the 62nd minute to provide a two-goal cushion.
LIU is now unbeaten in four NEC matches (2-0-2).
The Sharks next face Saint Francis U on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Loretto, Pa.
