FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Emil Jaaskelainen returned to the scoresheet and
Eoin Gawronski returned to goalkeeping … both in a big way.
Jaaskelainen scored a pair of goals and Gawronski flirted with a shutout as the LIU men's soccer team defeated host Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Sunday.
Both of Jaaskelainen's goals came off passes from
Alan Martinez.
Jaaskelainen headed in the first of his pair of goals at the left post in the 32nd minute. The pair connected again in the 52nd minute.
"I know he has a great delivery," Jaaskelainen said, "so I always make sure I get in there."
Jaaskelainen, the NEC's reigning Player of the Year, snapped a five-match scoreless drought.
"I feel like I've been playing well without the goals, but at the end of the day goals are what everyone looks at," Jaaskelainen said. "Hopefully I can keep scoring now."
An own goal off an errant LIU header in the 80th minute pulled the Pioneers within 2-1.
Gawronski returned to the starting goalkeeper role after missing three matches due to injury. He made a pair of saves.
LIU improved to 4-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference.
The Sharks return to action next Sunday when they host Merrimack at 2 p.m. at LIU Soccer Park.
