STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — LIU women's basketball hung with the preseason No. 1 selection, Wagner, on Sunday afternoon.
The Sharks ultimately fell, 80-63, and moved to 2-13 overall and 0-3 in NEC play.
LIU held a two-point lead after the first quarter, but they ended up trailing, 43-30, at halftime.
After forcing the Seahawks to shoot 31% from the floor, Wagner ignited its offense and shot 13-20 in the second quarter to build their lead going into the break.
Shyan Mwai paced the offense through the first 20 minutes with 11 points on 3-7 from beyond the arc.
In the third, the Sharks trimmed the deficit down to seven on multiple occasions but could not withstand the on-ball pressure from Wagner, resulting in seven turnovers in the period alone.
After a 13-point outing on Friday, Mwai led all scorers with 23 on an efficient clip (8-14 FG, 5-10 3PT).
Cristina Bermejo added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
LIU returns to action on Jan. 14 at home vs. Saint Francis U.
