BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Emil Jaaskelainen scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute and the LIU men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win against Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park.
Henry Haferkorn's first goal of the season, on a header off a free kick from
Robert Winkler, had pulled the Sharks even in the 64th minute.
Goalkeeper
Gianluca Cersosimo, making his second straight start, made four saves en route to the win.
LIU, which has posted consecutive victories against Dartmouth and Manhattan, improved to 4-2.
"We weren't great today," coach Mike Mordocco said. "We're still trying to figure out who we are. But it's the sign of a good team to find ways to win games and get results. We weren't sharp. We were slow. But somehow we dug in. We stayed a little disciplined.
"We used a lot of players today. A lot of guys gave us a good injection and good energy, because we started the game with low energy. Overall, it's a good win. They're a really good team. I'm not quite sure we deserved it, but my guys never quit. And they play with a lot of heart."
