BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — María Camila Orozco wasted no time getting the LIU women's soccer team on the scoreboard in its home opener on Sunday afternoon.
Orozco scored less than three minutes into the match and the Sharks went on to defeat Delaware State, 2-0, at the LIU Soccer Park.
The win marked the first in the career of head coach
Lucy Gillett.
"It's good to get that first win. Hopefully there's many more to come," Gillett said. "It's great to see the girls performing well and putting what we worked on in practice into play today."
Taylor Curcio stole the ball at midfield and fed Orozco, who blistered a shot with her right foot into the upper right corner of the goal to open the scoring.
Gina Proviano added a goal in the 70th minute to secure the victory. The assist came from grad transfer
Caroline Nuttall, who was making her LIU debut.
Redshirt freshman
Eva Katsaitis recorded the shutout and earned her first collegiate victory.
Orozco's last goal came on March 16, 2021, at Bryant.
"When I saw Maria making the run through, she was in a perfect position," Curcio said. "I just slotted it through, and she got the job done. It was great teamwork and communication. That's what it takes."
The Sharks evened their record at 1-1.
They return to action Thursday when they host Saint Peter's at 5 p.m.
