SHARKS WIN! Softball Splits Sunday with Merrimack College

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The LIU softball team took on Merrimack in a double header on a windy Sunday, taking the first game 7-0 and dropping the second game of the day 3-0. The Warriors claimed the three-game series 2-1 with the win on Saturday.

SHARK BITES
GAME 1 – LIU 7, MC 0
  • The Sharks earned seven runs over four different innings in their first game of the day, scoring one in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth, and a final run crossed the plate in the seventh.
  • In the first, Camryn Lyman started things off with a walk and thanks to a Ciara Granado single, she crossed the plate after having advanced to third on the two previous plays.
  • In the top of the second Kristen Blanchard walked and then stole second. She scored when Angelina Reno hit a double before advancing to third on the throw. When Dallas Andrews grounded out on the next play, Reno was able to bring in run number two of the inning and the Sharks were ahead 3-0. The final run of the inning came when Katie Hinkle scored on a passed ball. It was 4-0 to the Sharks.
  • The fourth inning saw Hinkle cross the plate again, this time from first base, when Ryleigh Bermea doubled to left field, getting the RBI. Bermea herself scored when Kiana Cisneros reached base.
  • The final run came in the seventh. Priscilla Gilles came in as a pinch runner for Maya Avila who started the inning with a single. Gilles advanced to second when Blanchard grounded out. She then scored an unearned run after an error by second base got Reno to second base. The Sharks claimed the 7-0 victory.
  • Alyssa O'Donnell, now 6-7, earned the shut-out win on the mound for the Sharks.

GAME 2 – MC 3, LIU 0
  • In the rubber match, Merrimack scored first and scored early. Two runs were driven across the plate in the bottom of the first off of three hits from the Warriors.
  • Neither team would score again until Merrimack added another run in the fourth inning off of three hits.
  • Senior pitcher Elena Valenzuela, 3-9, got the loss on the mound.
  • Up next, the Sharks will be taking on St. John's University in Queens on Wednesday April 13 at 3 p.m.
