Softball Starts NEC Play Against Saint Francis

LORETTO, Penn. – The LIU softball team headed out to Pennsylvania to take on Saint Francis University in their first conference double header of the season, falling 13-10 in the first game and 8-1 in the second.

SHARK BITES
Game 1 – SFU 13, LIU 10
  • In the first game, the Red Flash came out hot, scoring three in the bottom of the first off of four hits.
  • The Sharks responded in the top of the second though. Victoria Zatko got on base to start the inning off and reached second when Gabby Padilla made it to first on an error. A Kiana Cisneros fly-out had Zatko pushing to third. Kristen Blanchard's single got her an RBI when Zatko crossed the plate. Katie Hinkle then drove in Gabby Padilla, and Camryn Lyman's single pushed in Blanchard for LIU to tie it up 3-3 in the middle of the second.
  • In the top of the third, the Sharks would take the 4-3 lead after Kiana Cisneros drove in Ciara Granado, who walked to get on base.
  • SFU responded though in the bottom of the third, scoring two off of three hits to retake the lead at 5-4.
  • The Sharks tied it up again, 5-5, in the top of the fourth when a double from Ryleigh Bermea drove in Lyman.
  • Saint Francis kept pushing though, adding two more to their tally with three hits and one error to go ahead 7-5.
  • Once more, LIU would level the score, this time in the top of the fifth. Cisneros, who started the inning with a single, was driven in by Lyman and then Blanchard, who'd gotten on base thanks to an error, was pushed in by a single from Bermea to tie it up 7-7.
  • SFU then grabbed the lead and didn't let it go, scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 11-7.
  • Blanchard and Hinkle both crossed the plate for LIU in the top of the sixth, to get back within two, but in the bottom half of the inning, SFU added two more runs on four hits, holding the lead at 13-9.
  • The Sharks would tack on one more in the seventh when Zatko singled to drive in Bermea, but it wasn't enough and the Red Flash took game one 13-10.
  • Desiree Smith was credited with the loss on the mound for the Sharks.

Game 2 – SFU 8, LIU 1
  • In a repeat move, SFU would score three in the bottom of the first to take the early 3-0 lead over the Sharks on three hits before scoring another unanswered in the second to lead 4-0.
  • The Sharks sole run came in the top of the fourth when Kiana Cisneros was driven across the plate by Katie Hinkle's single.
  • The Red Flash would then score three more off of three runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-1, before adding a final run in the bottom of the fifth off of two hits to take game two of the series 8-1.
  • Alyssa O'Donnell (5-6) got the loss on the mound for the Sharks.

Up next, the Sharks will face off against the Red Flash in a final game tomorrow, March 20 at 12 p.m.
