BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The LIU women's tennis team beat local rival Hofstra Saturday evening, 4-0. The Sharks shut out the Pride, winning all three doubles nights, and three singles matches in straight sets.
"We had a great atmosphere today, thanks to all the fans who came out to support us," head coach
Jan Griga said. "It made for a fun and exciting match. We had a good start in doubles, and then carried that momentum into singles. It was a job well done today."
SHARK BITES
- Valentina Dancenco and Sofiya Kuzina had the first win of the night, beating their opponents at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-4. LIU also had 6-4 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, taking the early 1-0 lead.
- Kuzina had the first win in singles at No. 4, where she beat April Sanchez, 6-1, 6-1.
- Bianca Compuesto had the next win in the No. 2 singles match, where she defeated Kayla Solagnier, 6-0, 6-3.
- Victoria Erechtchenko clinched the match win for the Sharks at No. 1, where she defeated Katerine Kacharov, 6-3, 6-1.
- Valentina Dancenco and Elinor Storkaas had both won their first sets and were midway through the second when the match was called. And at No. 6 singles, Kate Jorjoliani had rallied from a first set win and won set two, 6-4 when the match halted.
- Up next, the Sharks take on Fordham on the road, Saturday, February 12 at 4 p.m.
