Softball Beats FAU, 5-0 to Split Final Day at FAU Invite

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The LIU softball team wrapped up the final day of action at Florida Atlantic's Strikeout Cancer Invitational Sunday, falling to Michigan State, 6-4 in extra innings, and beating the host Owls, 5-0.

SHARK vs. SPARTANS
  • In the first game of the day, LIU fared well against BIG TEN foe Michigan State, taking the Spartans to extra innings.
  • MSU would score first in the top of the third, scoring a run on three hits to take the early advantage.
  • LIU made it exciting in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run to tie things up. Senior Ciara Granado led off with a double, and pinch runner Alyssa Okada was advanced on a sac bunt from Katie Hinkle. Maya Avila would single to right field to score the speedy junior from third to knot it up, 1-1.
  • Neither team scored in the seventh, and the game went to extra innings.
  • Michigan State would go on a three-run spree in the top of the eighth, jumping out to a 4-1 lead.
  • But the Sharks answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own. With two on and one out, senior Kristen Blanchard had an RBI single to score the first run. A sac bunt for Kelsey Day scored another, and then senior Camryn Lyman had an RBI double down the left field line to tie it up, 4-4.
  • In the ninth, the Spartans would score twice more, taking the 6-4 lead. This time, however, LIU was not able to answer, and MSU clinched the win.
  • Senior Elena Valenzuela (1-5) had the complete-game loss on the mound, giving up just four earned runs across 9.0 innings pitched.

SHARKS vs. OWLS
  • LIU bounced back from the tough loss with a big win in the second game of the day, beating host Florida Atlantic, 5-0.
  • The Sharks got on the board in the third. Blanchard led off with a walk, and was advanced on a sac bunt and a passed ball. She came home on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Kiana Cisneros, 1-0.
  • LIU added more runs in the top of the fifth. Granado would bring another run home with an RBI single, and Cisneros would score on a passed ball to make it 3-0 Sharks.
  • Then in the top of the sixth, Hinkle singled to get on base with one out. She came home on the next at bat, when senior Angelina Reno blasted a home run down the right field line to clear the bases. Her first homer of the season put LIU up, 5-0.
  • FAU was unable to answer in the next two innings, and the Sharks took the 5-0 win.
  • Sophomore Alyssa O'Donnell (2-3) pitched the complete game shutout, going 7.0 innings with no runs scored and just five hits, while striking out three.
  • Up next, the Sharks head to the Spring Games in Madiera Beach, Florida, March 4-12.
