Women's Basketball Shows Plenty of Grit Against Hofstra in Saturday Showdown

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The LIU women's basketball team showed plenty of fight in its 74-70 loss to Hofstra on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks trailed 24-8 after the first quarter but batted back. LIU went on a 13-0 scoring run and Mariah Elohim was a big reason why.

The freshman guard scored 11 first half points, after drilling three deep three pointers. LIU went into the half down 33-32.

"We made a big push at the end of the first half, said head coach Rene Haynes after the game. "We were down early but battled hard and pushed back."

The Sharks came out strong in the second half. LIU opened up to a five point lead after De'Asia Thomas, Ashley Austin and Shyan Mwai led the Sharks on a brief scoring run.

Thomas finished the game with 11 points, Mwai drained 10 points and Austin wrapped up the game with 12 points.

Elohim finished the game with a team-high 16 points. The freshman led the Sharks in scoring for the second straight game.

"She's a shooter and she brings great energy to the team. Mariah does a great job with feeding off her teammates. She had the hot hand today and she played a great game, said Haynes."

LIU returns to the Steinberg Wellness Center on Monday at 4p.m. against Iona.
