EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU men's hockey team took then-No. 9 Northeastern to overtime in the season opener in Boston.
The rematch at Northwell Health Ice Center again went to the extra period.
Northeastern ultimately prevailed, 4-3, in OT on Sunday night in a physical contest on a goal from Sam Colangelo.
Anthony Vincent scored a pair of goals 2 minutes, 34 seconds apart midway through the third period to pull the Sharks even at 3.
Earlier,
Adam Goodsir's power-play goal with 23.3 seconds remaining in the second period had started LIU's climb out of a 3-0 hole.
LIU had taken Northeastern to overtime in the season opener thanks to a third-period equalizer from Goodsir before falling, 3-2, on Oct. 1.
On Sunday night, goaltender
Vinnie Purpura stopped a breakaway from Northeastern's Justin Hryckowian midway through the second period to keep the Sharks' deficit at 1-0. However, the Huskies got a pair of goals 37 seconds apart later in the period to open a three-goal cushion.
The Sharks now take a holiday break before returning to action Dec. 29 when they host 10th-ranked UConn at Northwell Health Ice Center.
