BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU women's soccer team's pursuit of an NEC postseason berth will go down to the wire.
Howard defeated the Sharks, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park to earn its first victory of the season.
LIU dipped to 3-8-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the NEC. The top six teams qualify for the conference tournament.
Victoria Thornton scored in the 53rd minute for the match's lone goal.

Matiana Valdez stopped a shot at the goal line to prevent a second score from Howard in the second half.
LIU returns to action Sunday when it hosts Wagner for Senior Day at 1 p.m. at LIU Soccer Park.
