Senior Superlative! Women's Soccer Tops Wagner, Moves Closer to NEC Tourney Berth

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU women's soccer team honored its seniors on Sunday. Then, in the final home match of the regular season, the Sharks took care of business to move closer to locking up an NEC Tournament berth.

Sarah Borer scored the game-winner in the 28th minute as LIU topped Wagner, 1-0, at LIU Soccer Park.

Borer, a graduate student and five-year LIU student-athlete, was playing her final home match on Sunday. She produced her first goal since Oct. 7, 2021, at Mount St. Mary's.

The Sharks (4-8-3 overall) improved to 2-2-2 in the NEC. Three road matches remain to close the regular season. LIU appears in strong position to earn a berth in the six-team conference tournament.

The Sharks currently occupy the sixth and final slot with eight points. They own a five-point lead over Wagner and Howard, which are tied for seventh.

During Sunday's Senior Day ceremony, LIU honored Grace Cagnina, Kayla DeTreux, Sami Jablonski, Tatianna Lizarraga, Amanda Marasco, Mariah Morgan, Kendra Oldroyd, María Camila Orozco and Nevaeh Rascon. Also recognized were Taylor Curcio, Emily Tirado, Oliva Wesch and Borer, who participated in the 2021 Senior Day ceremony and then used additional eligibility to return for this season.

DeTreux made four saves and earned her second shutout of the season.

LIU returns to action Oct. 13 at Fairleigh Dickinson.
