Women’s Ice Hockey Clashes with Mercyhurst

ERIE, Penn. – The LIU women's ice hockey team fell behind early to the Mercyhurst Lakers and despite a push and two goals in the second period, the Sharks couldn't fight their way back, and the home team took the win, 4-2. LIU is now 11-9-1 on the season.

  • Mercyhurst claimed an early 1-0 lead an even strength goal in the first.
  • On a power play early in the second period, Mercyhurst nabbed another goal to pad their lead and go ahead 2-0
  • The Sharks answered three minutes later, when freshman Maggie Korneta scored to make it 2-1
  • Just thirty seconds later though, the Lakers answered and took a 3-1 lead, and three minutes later, scored again to go up 4-1.
  • Midway through the second period, junior Matilda af Bjur got another back for LIU, and decreased the deficit for the Sharks to 4-2.
  • Nothing was going in for either team in the third period, and Tindra Holm had 28 saves for LIU on the evening.
  • On top of her goal, af Bjur totaled five total shots on goal and had three blocks.
  • Junior Carrigan Umpherville earned assists on both of the Sharks' goals.
  • Up next, the Sharks are facing off against Mercyhurst again for the second meeting in a two-game series on January 8.
