BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU field hockey team had a dramatic win at home Sunday, shortly after celebrating Senior Day. The Sharks battled Lehigh into overtime, winning 1-0 on a penalty stroke.
The two teams battled through 60 minutes of regulation with neither team scoring. LIU's defense held up through a five-minute man-down situation, with keeper
Rachel Vellis making seven saves in net to lead the Sharks to OT.
In the overtime period, senior
Sammy Bell made a breakaway on offense, taking on Lehigh's keeper. The goalie fouled her, giving LIU the penalty stroke. Senior
Michaela Zabicki made the shot, ending the game, 1-0 in favor of the home team. The goal was the first of her career.
