PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The LIU men's soccer team notched its first win of the 2021 season Sunday evening in dramatic fashion. The Sharks hit the road to face off against Saint Joseph's University, and beat the host Hawks in overtime, 1-0. Sophomore
Emil Jaaskelainen scored the game winner just under two minutes into overtime.
The two teams were even in shots on net, with six apiece. It was goalie
Demetri Skoumbakis who made the difference for the Sharks, making six saves in net to earn the shutout win.
While it was the defense that kept LIU in the game for 91 minutes, it was Jaaskelainen's golden goal that secured the win. Just 103 seconds into the overtime period, the sophomore found the back of the net.
Hans Oeftger's pass through the defense started the play, and Jaaskelainen set in on the keeper to score the game-winner and give LIU the 1-0 win.
The shot was one of four Jaaskelainen had on het.
Henry Haferkorn and
Matthias Heiland also both had shots on net for the Sharks.
Up next, LIU continues the early season road swing, traveling to the Bronx to take on Fordham, Saturday, September 4 at 1 p.m.
