LEWISBURG, Pa. - The LIU field hockey team battled Bucknell to overtime in its season opener Sunday afternoon, falling to the host Bison, 2-1, on a golden goal scored just 58 seconds into the period.
After a scoreless first half, the Sharks got on the board in the third period, when senior
Sammy Bell scored her first goal of the year. LIU got a penalty corner, and both
Felicia King and
Meilin Liotard had assists as she scored just three minutes before the end of the period.
Bucknell evened the game up with just eight seconds left to play, scoring a goal on a penalty corner to tie it up 1-1, and force the overtime period. The home team pressured right away with a shot, and drew a penalty corner. LIU's defense blocked the shot, but Bucknell managed to get a second corner. This time, they converted, scoring the golden goal to wrench the win out of LIU's hands, 2-1.

Rachel Vellis had eight saves in net to help keep the Sharks in the game.
