Softball Wins 17th Straight With Two Wins at Bryant Wednesday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The LIU softball team completed a four-game sweep of their fifth Northeast Conference team Wednesday afternoon, beating Bryant twice, 6-0 and 11-2 in five innings. The Sharks have now won 17 straight, and are 25-3 in the NEC.

GAME ONE
  • Senior Patricia Griffin had the first RBI of the day in the top of the second inning of game one, with a triple to right center field that would score Katie Hinkle and put LIU up, 1-0.
  • The Sharks added an unearned run in the top of the fourth, and then took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth, when catcher Samantha Garcia hit a home run bomb over the left center field fence.
  • LIU added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Hinkle would lead off with a single and steal second, coming home on Griffin's RBI single. Senior Ciara Granado would hit a sac fly that would bring Griffin home, and Kiana CIsneros would score the sixth run of the day with an RBI double to left center field.
  • Senior Tallie Woodson would earn the complete game win for the Sharks, moving to 14-1 on the mound. She pitched 7.0 shutout innings, striking out nine batters.

GAME TWO
  • In the second game of the day, the Sharks went on the board in the top of the second, and would score in every inning thereafter, run-ruling the Bulldogs. It's the ninth time this season the Sharks have been able to end a game early.
  • Junior Kristen Blanchard had a two-out RBI single in the second to score freshman Dallas Andrews, putting LIU up, 1-0.
  • The Sharks added four runs in the top of the third. Four straight walks led off the inning and brought home a run, 2-0. A wild pitch allowed Granado to score from third, and then sophomore Maya Avila would single to center field scoring two more runs, and giving LIU a 5-0 lead.
  • In the fourth, senior Alina Castillo had an RBI groundout, and Avila added another RBI with her single up the middle, and the Sharks led, 7-0.
  • In the fifth, Granado hit a two-run home run over the left field fence, giving LIU a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Kelsey Day came up two batters later, and with two outs, hit a double to right center field that would score another run to make it 11-0 LIU.
  • Bryant would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to close the gap, and the Sharks got the 11-2 win.
  • Senior Haley Irvis got the win on the mound to move to 9-1. She had four strikeouts and gave up just three hits in 5.0 innings of action.

Up next, the Sharks have their bye weekend, with nine days of rest before welcoming Saint Francis U. to LIU Softball Complex for a four game series to wind up the regular season, May 8 and 9.
