Baseball Meets SHU in Midweek Matchup

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU baseball team had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday at LIU Field, but the Sharks could not complete the comeback, and fell to Sacred Heart in a non-conference matchup, 9-7.

SHI would go up quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Sharks would add a run in the bottom of the frame, when senior Anthony Warneke had an RBI single to make it 3-1. In the second, an RBI groundout by freshman Connor Price would bring another run in, and LIU had cut the lead to 3-2.

The Pioneers would use a two RBI homer in the third to widen the lead to 5-2, and finished the inning on top, 6-2. The visiting team added another run in the fifth, and two more in the sixth, widening the lead to 9-2.

The Sharks began to chip away at the lead late in the game. In the bottom of the seventh, a two run home run by Collin Adams made it 9-5, and a sac fly just a few plays later cut the lead to 9-6. In the bottom of the ninth, the Sharks added another run. With one out, Warneke walked, and advanced on a wild pitch. A double by Christopher Wasson put him on third, and a single by Davyn Adamscheck brought him home, to make it 9-7. With runners on the corners and one out, LIU's hopes were still alive, but SHU's closer got the next two batters to strikeout, ending the game in favor of the Pioneers, 9-7.

Up next, LIU hosts Fairleigh Dickinson for a three game Northeast Conference series, Thursday, April1 through Saturday, April 3.
