BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking defeat Monday afternoon. The Sharks, hosting the FDU Knights, fell to the visiting team 3-2 in overtime. FDU scored the golden goal just under five minutes into the extra period.
LIU had led for most of the contest, as all three of FDU's goals came in the final 15 minutes of action.
The Sharks got on the board at 18:50 in the first half, when freshman
Papa Sow knocked a ball in past the Knights' goalie to put LIU up, 1-0.
Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half, LIU held on to the 1-0 lead at the break. The team added a goal midway through the second half, when freshman
Emil Jaaskelainen scored in the 66th minute off a pass from
Jonas Dovland. LIU would hold on to the 2-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes more, until in the final ten minutes, FDU's pressure began to mount.
The Knights would score in the 80th minute, and despite being a man down late in the game due to a red card, added another goal to tie it up with 1:17 left to play in regulation.
Riding the momentum into the extra period, the Knights scored another man-down goal five minutes into play on a header, ending the game and taking the overtime win, 3-2.
With the loss, LIU moves to 1-1-1 in the Northeast Conference, while FDU improves to 2-0. Up next, the Sharks head north to take on Merrimack College, Monday, March 22.
