Women's Hockey Takes on Syracuse to Open Weekend Series

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's ice hockey team took on Syracuse University in a non-conference tilt inside Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday, Feb. 19. The Sharks came up short to the Orange by a 5-2 final.

Syracuse opened the scoring at the midway point of the first period when Anna Leschyshyn scored a short-handed tally. Shelby Calof doubled Syracuse's advantage just before the end of the stanza, scoring her first goal of the season.

The Blue and Gold cut the deficit in half at the 8:05 mark of period two as Ashley Morrow scored an unassisted, power-play goal, her second strike of the season. The Orange shifted momentum late in the period again, however, scoring with 38 seconds remaining to carry a two-goal advantage into the final frame.

After Leschyshyn netted her second goal of the contest for Syracuse, LIU made it a two-goal game once again as Abby Latorella stole a pass at the blue line and walked in on cage and buried a wrist shot for her third goal of 2021. The Orange tacked on one final tally on the power-play and held on for the win.

The Sharks' penalty kill was busy but effective on the night, successfully killing seven of nine opportunities for Syracuse. The defensive unit held a 14-9 edge in blocked shots, led by three blocks by Matilda af Bjur.

Megan Bouveur won a team-high eight faceoffs, while Linn Ploug notched a team-best five shots. Between the pipes, Kenzie Harmison posted 38 saves.

LIU will return to the ice for game-two of its weekend series in Syracuse tomorrow afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Orange.
