Men's Tennis 2021 Fall Round-Up

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's tennis team competed in four events this fall: three invitationals, and the ITA Regionals event held at the University of Pennsylvania. Below is a brief wrap-up of each event and the results.
 
Bryant Invitational (Sep. 25-26)
LIU began its inagural season by going to Rhode Island to compete against opponents from three schools over two days. 
  • The doubles duo of graduate students Ben Brandherm and Guilherme De Medeiros won all three of their doubles matches, defeating Bentley College's Reilly O'Brien and Noah Monsanto 7-6 (4), Max Bonte and Gabe Horwitz from Bentley 8-2, and David Ammendola and Parsa Raissi from Bryant University, 8-1. 
  • In singles play, De Medeiros won over Merrimack's Henrik Lindeman 6-1, 6-4.
  • First-year Alessandro D'Anna defeated two singles opponents from Bentley, first taking down Daniel Weitz, 6-3, 6-3 and then Liam Marr, 6-2, 6-4. 
  • Philip Hilble won over Bentley's Noah Monsanto, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Loyola Classic (Oct. 8-9)
For their second event of the fall, the Sharks competed in Baltimore against Loyola University Maryland, Morgan State University, and Coppin State University.
  • Brandherm and De Medeiros won two more doubles matches this go around, taking down their opponents from Loyola, 6-1 and Coppin State 7-6 (1). 
  • Doubles team D'Anna and Akhilendran Indrabalan won over Loyola's Skyler Gates and George Cavo, 6-4. 
  • Brandherm individually went on to win over three opponents from each of the participating schools, defeating Loyola's Liam Rompre, 8-2, Morgan State's Sebastian Lopez, 9-7, and Coppin State's Kapoor, 6-1 6-0. 
  • De Medeiros beat Loyola's Jorge Quintana, 8-1, and CSU's Haden, 6-3, 6-4. 
  • D'Anna defeated Oliver Davey of Loyola, 8-2, and his doubles partner Indrabalan also won a singles match over his Loyola opponent, Colin Corsini, 8-6. 
 
ITA Regionals (Oct. 14-19)
  • Ben Brandherm and Guilherme De Medeiros defeated Jack Selati and Rohan Gupta of Colgate 8-6. 
  • Brandherm then battled back in a singles match to win against Penn competitor Zach Smith, winning 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
 
Navy Invitational (Nov. 12-14)
In their final event of the fall season, the Sharks clashed against five other schools in Annapolis where they switched up their doubles pairings and had three players win at least two singles matches each. 
  • The new pairing of Indrabalan and De Medeiros took down three opposing doubles teams, winning over Navy's Conners O'Brien and Nicholas Nguyen 6-3, Monmouth's Dmitry Bezborodov and Gabriel Busato 6-4, and Princeton's Mahoney and Gore. 
  • Brandherm and D'Anna defeated Jan Kjellberg and Cy McLeod from Navy 6-2. 
  • Indrabalan battled and took down three opponents in singles play, topping Diego Laporta from Monmouth, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, William Pak from Navy, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, and E. Gonzalez from the University of Delaware, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
  • De Medeiros won over Navy's Nguyen, 6-4, 7-5, and Eric Liu, 6-2, 6-2. 
  • D'Anna also won two singles matches, one over Princeton's Aidan Mahoney, 6-2, 6-1, and another over Navy's McLeod, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
