BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's soccer team clinched the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Conference postseason tournament Sunday, along with a share of the regular season championship title, beating St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-1.
With the win, LIU finishes the regular season with an 11-4-2 overall record, and 7-2-0 in the NEC. The Sharks will host the 2021 NEC Championship title November 12 and 14 at LIU Soccer Park as the top seed. LIU will take on No. 4 seed Bryant in the semifinals, while No. 2 seed St. Francis Brooklyn will battle No. 3 seed FDU in the other semifinal game.
SHARK BITES
- SFBK got on the board first, scoring in the 29th minute. But three minutes later on a corner, sophomore Assane Ben Fall kicked a free ball into the back of the net, tying it up, 1-1.
- The two teams stayed tied until the 65th minute in the second half, when sophomore Emil Jaaskelainen would score on another corner. Andre Puente had a shot that was blocked, and in the scrum, Jasskelainen came up with it, and knocked it into the back right corner, giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead.
- Two minutes later, senior captain Fridtjof Andberg put the game out of reach for good, scoring a third goal off a pass from Jasskelainen and Javier Rehberger to make it 3-1 Sharks.
- Up next is the NEC Tournament. Semifinal games will take place Friday, November 12.
