Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

GOING TO THE 'SHIP! MSoc Beats Bryant in PKs to Advance

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The top-seeded LIU men's soccer team played 110 minutes of soccer Friday in the Northeast Conference semifinals against Bryant, only to have the game come down to penalty kicks, in an echo of last year's NEC championship game. This time, however, LIU came out on top, beating the #4 seeded Bulldogs, 5-4 in PKs to advance to the NEC championship game Sunday afternoon.

SHARK BITES
  • #1 seed LIU will take on #2 seed St. Francis Brooklyn, in a rematch of last year's championship game. In that game, the then-top seeded Terriers bested LIU in PKs.
  • Though the Sharks had multiple opportunities to score in regulation at home Friday, registering 16 shots, nine of which the Bryant keeper saved, LIU didn't get on the board in the 90 minutes of regulation. And neither did Bryant.
  • Neither team had a golden goal in the two overtime periods either, and the semis went to penalty kicks.
  • Matthias Heiland, Javier Rehberger and Fridtjof Andberg each made their PKs before goalie Demetri Skoumbakis made a save, giving the Sharks the edge. Freshman Alan Martinez made his, and the decision came down to LIU's fifth: Emil Jaaskelainen. The sophomore made his kick, clinching the 5-4 penalty kick advantage for LIU, and advancing them to the championship game.
  • The Terriers and the Sharks will face off Sunday for an NEC title at 1 p.m. The game will aire live on ESPN3.
