Women’s Ice Hockey Takes #5 Yale to OT

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The LIU women's ice hockey team nearly notched the biggest win in program history Tuesday afternoon at the Northwell Health Ice Center. The Sharks hosted No.5 nationally-ranked Yale, and were tied with the Bulldogs after three periods, 1-1. The two teams went to OT, and that's where Yale put on the pressure, scoring a sudden death goal just 55 seconds into play to take the 2-1 win.

  • Yale moves to 8-2-1 with the win.
  • The Sharks are now 8-7 on the season, having suffered their first loss since October 9th.
  • Freshman goalie Tindra Holm was outstanding in net, making 54 saves to keep LIU in contention throughout the game.
  • Yale scored first on a power play goal in the first period, going up, 1-0.
  • In the second period, however, the Sharks answered. Sophomore Alex Thomas scored the first goal of her collegiate career when wired a slapper from just inside the blue line. She was fed from Megan Roe and Abby Latorella, tying the game up, 1-1.
  • Yale would fire 16 shots in the third period, but didn't score again, sending the teams to overtime.
  • In the 3v3 extra period, the Bulldogs went on the offensive right away, registering two shots in the first 45 seconds, The pressure worked, as the visiting team would finally get one past Holm at the 55 second mark, taking the sudden death win.
  • Alva Johnsson blocked four shots for the Sharks, while freshman Jeannie Wallner blocked three. 10 other Sharks had blocks on defense as a part of the effort.
  • Up next, the Sharks host Franklin Pierce for a two game series, December 3 and 4.
